Space Logistics Operations are starting to appear as private enterprises have developed commercial rockets, which can take cargo or people into space. But it’s been Science Fiction books, films and TV programs like Star Trek and The Expanse, which have inspired the world to look at new ideas, new technology, computer, artificial intelligence or AI and engineering concepts to create Space Logistics opportunities.
In 1945, Arthur C Clarke, first proposed the idea of a communications satellite. Decades later, this idea has transformed the world as every part of the world is connected. Today, there are hundreds of satellites orbiting the earth, these satellites include communication, weather, navigation and earth resource monitoring protecting our home world. The military also have their own range of satellites including their own communications, spy and missile detection satellites. Today, building satellites is big business. Surrey Satellites. are one of the best and have been building satellites for the last 30 years. Today, there are over 500 satellites of all types in orbit which have been designed and built by Surrey Satellites.
But satellite technology has also transformed the world supply chain networks. Now you track your shipment anywhere in the world, technology has helped to make logistics easy for you regardless of what planet you live on. Today, you can book a shipment online and watch it being collected and track its entire routing and watch it being delivered to the end user.
Modern Science fiction media allows authors to develop there own ideas and portray them to a wider audience in the form of short stories, novels, audiobooks and through visual entertainment media platforms including games, TV programs and in Sci-Fi movies.
Arthur C Clarke, Isaac Asimov and Gene Roddenberry are just a few of the thousands of writers around the world, who have inspired children and teenagers to become scientists, technologists and engineers who have then designed new materials, fuels, technology, computers, artificial intelligence and ultimately new spacecraft.
Authors, like Gene Roddenberry, whom created Star Trek envisaged a Federation of Planets, all working together. But all of those planets were all connected by starships, which sailed through the stars at warp speed, instead of through the earth oceans.
James S.A Corey, who wrote, The Expanse series of books has created an entire society living in earth own solar system. Earth, Mars and the Belt were all connected by ships carrying people and cargo at sub light speeds using the Epstein Drive, whereas Star Trek used Warp Drive to travel between the stars at faster than light speeds.
The Epstein Drive which is used in The Expanse Series of books and the Star Trek Warp Drive are all technically possible. Today, the Ion drive has started to replace conventional chemical rockets and it’s even been used on Deep Space Missions that are still exploring our solar system.
Science fiction has been an interest of mine, since I was a boy, but I accidently fell into logistics. Today, there are dozens of companies developing space ports around the world. These will become the gateway to space for many commercial operations. One of these companies is Spaceport Cornwall, which is based at Newquay Airport in Cornwall. Spaceport Cornwall will be the home of the UK Horizontal Launch Solution in 2021. It’s just like going to a normal airport and getting on a Boeing 747 and heading off on holiday, but this 747 aircraft is managed by Virgin Orbit and it has been specially modified, so that it can carry will carry a large booster rocket carrying satellites under its wing. That will be something to see!
The UK government is starting to help set up the infrastructure to support these new operations. The future for humanity, is in space, it’s our destiny to explore strange new planets and as Star Trek, Captain Kirk always said, to seek out new life and new civilizations and boldly go, where no one has gone before. Logistics will always be here, adapting to the new challenges in these new interplanetary locations.
